GUATEMALA
  • La Voz de la Comunidad - Guatemala
    La Voz de la Comunidad (The Voice of the Community)started on August 19, 1990, with a simple system of six cone speakers, a small amplifier and a couple of turntables. Some started calling it "The Voice of the Ravine" because of its location on the slopes of the La Barranca River, which runs near the centre of the capital city of Guatemala. ASEP, a local NGO, provided technical support, WACC and PRODESA, a Catholic institution in Guatemala, funded the equipment. According to the broadcasting legislation of Guatemala, the station is illegal or pirate. In order to avoid sanctions it has kept a low profile during the past months. Although it has a 20-watt transmitter, only 8 watts of power are in use.
  • Centro IXIM - Guatemala
    Centro Ixim is a Mayan video production collective created to promote peace and human rights in Guatemala. IXIM was created to open up communication opportunities for the Indigenous Mayan population of a country where the vast majority of the media is controlled by foreigners, the government and the non-indigenous ruling class. Discrimination, extreme poverty, and lack of educational opportunity and skills training are among the obstacles which now keep the majority of Guatemala's population from the realm of public communication.
  • Nutzij Centro de Mujeres Comunicadoras Mayas - Guatemala
    Nutzij (My Word, in Maya Kaqchikel), also known as the Centro de Mujeres Comunicadoras Mayas (CMCM) is a communication access centre in central Guatemala. Located at Sololá over Lake Atitlán, it is run by a collective of young Mayan women, mostly teachers at the Nueva Esperanza school in Xajaxac. Nutzij offers hands-on training and employment for indigenous women in visual media communication, mainly concentrating on video and the Internet. The centre aims to provide access to media-awareness and production skills for local communication in rural areas, as well as use of the Internet for marketing and international communication.
  • Enlace Quiché Project - Guatemala
    The Enlace Quiché Project produces multimedia materials for language instruction and strengthening cultural identity in teacher training schools.There are four technical assistants who run the labs of new machines and work with the teachers. The EQ project has staff with expertise in creating books in html, a database of Spanish-K'iche'-Ixil words, language games and exercises programmed in Visual Basic, and a CD-ROM of projects that will be done by the students. For instance, the skill of the weavers and embroiderers of the area is outstanding, and each village has different designs. One plan is to make a survey of the styles and techniques for different areas.
  • Proyecto Acción SIDA - PASCA - Guatemala, Panamá, Nicaragua, Honduras & Salvador (AIDS Counteraction Project - PASCA)
    An international program that focuses on regional aspects, promoting political dialog with the purpose of strengthening the response capacity that the participating countries have in view of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the sexual transmission diseases. The project promotes the flow of information amongst organizations, disseminates information on the impact of the disease, develops peer education activities and supports NGOs, networks, and national programs struggling against this disease. It provides technical assistance to government and non-government organizations working in the prevention of this disease in Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, Salvador and Guatemala.
